Step-by-step guide to lubricating switches for smooth operation
Are you tired of your keyboard switches feeling scratchy and unresponsive? Well, we have the perfect solution for you – lubricating your switches! Lubricating your keyboard switches can greatly improve their smoothness and overall performance. Keep in mind, some higher end switches come lightly factory lubed, so depending on how they feel to you it might not be necessary.
In the end, keyboards are all about preference, so always experiment with different solutions by yourself and see what you like the most. If you feel your switches could benefit from lube, keep reading! In this step-by-step guide, we will walk you through the process of lubricating your switches for a smoother typing experience.
Skip to Step 4 if your switches are not installed into a keyboard and ready for lube.
Step 1: Gather the necessary tools. You will need a lubricant specifically designed for mechanical switches (Krytox 205g0 is a popular choice for most types of switches, but others are available), a small brush or applicator, and a keycap puller.
Step 2: Remove the keycaps. Use the keycap puller to gently remove the keycaps from your keyboard. Set them aside in a safe place.
Step 3: Access the switches. Depending on your keyboard model, you may need to remove a few screws or clips to access the switches. Carefully remove any necessary components to expose the switches.
Step 4: Apply the lubricant. Start by separating the switch into its 4 components; the top and bottom housings, stem and spring. This can be done by hand, but using a switch opener greatly simplifies the process. Using your brush, apply a very small amount of lubricant to the two rails on either side of the bottom housing. The amount of lube will vary depending on switch type, but two blobs – each the size of half a grain of rice is a good amount to aim for.
Then, use any excess to coat the cylinder in the middle of the bottom housing. After that, using roughly the same amount – evenly coat your switch stem. A light sheen is all the lube necessary. Lastly, springs are not as sensitive to over-lubing so applying a larger amount to them should be fine. Focus on both ends of the spring. In our experience, dipping the spring and then wiping any excess works fine.
Step 5: Reassemble your switches. Remember to test them as you do this, feeling for any sluggishness that may result from over-lubing. Compare the first few switches you lube, emulating the one you like the most for your remaining switches – resulting in a more consistent feel.
Step 6: Reassemble the keyboard. After you have lubricated all the switches, carefully reassemble your keyboard. Make sure all the components are properly aligned and secured.
Step 7: Test and enjoy. Once your keyboard is reassembled, test out the switches to see the improvement in their smoothness. You should notice a significant difference in the typing experience, with smoother and more responsive switches.
By following this step-by-step guide, you can easily lubricate your keyboard switches for a smoother and more enjoyable typing experience. Remember to use a lubricant specifically designed for mechanical switches and to apply it sparingly. With a little bit of time and effort, you can transform your keyboard into a smooth and responsive typing machine!
